Each year, 2,000 premature babies receive care at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Many spend weeks on a ventilator — a lifesaving necessity that can leave them with long-term lung challenges. To protect these fragile lungs and support healthy development, we’re advancing two major innovations in care.
Traditional imaging exposes infants to radiation. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) changes that.
EIT is:
- Radiation‑free and non‑invasive
- Portable, used right at the NICU bedside
- Real‑time, showing how a baby’s lungs respond to treatment immediately
This technology allows our teams to deliver more precise, personalized care while reducing lung injury during a critical growth period.
Many babies go home on oxygen for months. To help them grow safely, we are launching a remote oxygen‑weaning program using wireless pulse oximeters. This lets pulmonologists adjust oxygen from afar, giving families confidence and ensuring babies receive exactly what they need at home.
Your Impact
Support from the 2221 Society will allow us to build the nation’s first comprehensive EIT program and expand remote monitoring for preterm infants. Your investment will help achieve:
- Fewer days on ventilators
- Less lung injury
- Shorter NICU stays
- Safe oxygen weaning at home
- Stronger long-term respiratory outcomes through ongoing research and tracking
2221 Society Goal: $800,000
Your gift will fund:
- NICU implementation of EIT
- Remote oxygen monitoring after discharge
- Long-term developmental follow‑up
Together, we can ensure brighter beginnings and healthier futures for Colorado’s tiniest patients.
