I am honored to be riding the Courage Classic in honor of Lella. After being diagnosed with biliary atresia at 2 months of age, her liver started to fail and she spent several weeks in the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) waiting for a life saving liver transplant. While Lella’s condition continued to deteriorate, her family desperately waited for the call that a liver was available for her; all while knowing that another family had to suffer the devastating loss of their own child and yet agree to donate his/her organs. After her transplant at 7 months old, Lella started to thrive and is now a healthy 14 year old that loves to dance, sing, do yoga, and swim competitively!! Every year within the PICU, we care for dozens of organ donors and organ recipients. These patients always make me think of Lella and her story as she is a beautiful example of a life saved through organ donation.
The Courage Classic is both a personal challenge and an opportunity to support positive outcomes for kids and families who rely on Children's Colorado for care. I will be riding my bike over 100 miles in the beautiful Rocky Mountains as a member of the PICU Peloton and would love your support!
