For the past thirteen summers, I have been so grateful for the support of the many friends, family members and colleagues who have generously sponsored my Courage Classic bike ride for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Over the course of those thirteen rides we have raised almost $400,000 to benefit the Hospital’s programs including creative therapies, sports programs for kids who are differently abled, and others. This year, my team and I are doing something differently with the funds we are raising, and I want to tell you a little bit about it before asking you to once again sponsor my ride.
When I left Colorado eighteen months ago, I was beyond humbled when CEO Jena Hausmann announced that Children’s Hospital Colorado and its Foundation would be endowing a new Chair in Quality and Patient Safety in my name. Having the hospital establish and endow the "Daniel Hyman Chair for Quality and Safety" is like a lifetime achievement award, and I am awed still by them doing this for the program, and in my honor. A new chair at Children’s is typically a $2M endowment fund which then spins off investment proceeds to provide spendable discretionary funds to the leader of the relevant program to advance work in their area of responsibility- whether that be research, education, clinical care, or, as with this new chair, in improving quality and safety.
For the 2022 Courage Classic, I am excited to tell you that my team, Gears of Courage, and I will all be directing our fundraising to the spendable fund for this new chair. This will provide immediately available funds to support the Hospital’s quality and safety program, as guided by the chairholder who will be named in the near future.
Given the establishment of this new chair in my name, and my team’s decision to support it, I am going to do something extra special this year and will be matching donations right from the start, and doubling the amount of your donations which I will match this year. My aim is to achieve a personal fundraising goal of $50,000, and a team goal of $100,000. With your help, I know we can do this!
You have been so generous in the past, and I hope I can once more count on you to help me do something truly special this year as our team raises money for “my Chair,” and to continuously improve care at the wonderful Children’s Hospital Colorado.
You know what to do, just click the “Donate Now” button on the top right above-
All the usual rules apply- donations are tax deductible, as allowed. There is no obligation ever to donate, of course, and if you want me to take you off this distribution list so you don’t get further solicitations, just say the word, no offense taken.
The technical language for this year’s targeted fundraising is as follows:
We will be directing our team fundraising to the Daniel Hyman Endowed Chair for Quality and Safety Spendable Fund. Its purpose is, “to support the Chief Quality and Safety Officer at Children’s Colorado, as well as encouraging innovative, cutting-edge research and world class clinical care governed thereunder.” We are making clear that all team fundraising will be directed to the spendable fund (for immediate use) rather than the endowed fund itself.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you again for your incredible support for so many years.
Gratefully, and looking forward to riding!
Dan
