Why I’m Riding my bicycle 123 Miles: For Myles, For Sage, and For Children’s Hospital
I am riding in and fundraising for the Courage Classic for one simple reason: Children’s Hospital Colorado is there for families in the exact moments they need it most.
If you want to know why this cause is so near and dear to my heart, it comes down to two stories.
I ride for Myles. When our friends Matt and Julie’s son, Myles, turned one, he suffered the first of what would become a series of seizures. At Children’s Hospital, they discovered Myles had a rare and terminal genetic condition where his mitochondria weren't producing enough energy. The diagnosis was, and still is, incredibly difficult to process. Even now, thinking about the loss of Myles and his beautiful, smiling face brings tears to my eyes. Children’s was there with Matt, Julie, and Myles every single step of the way, eventually connecting them with a community of other families navigating the unimaginable loss of a child. I will be riding with several of these families as part of our team this year.
I ride for Sage. When our eldest son, Sage, was just a baby, he developed severe jaundice and low oxygen saturation. Our doctor took one look at him and rushed us straight to Children’s. I still remember crying in sheer terror as they put Sage into an incubator and performed a spinal tap. After days of intensive tests, procedures, and months of supplemental oxygen, Sage stabilized. Today, he is a thriving, energetic 4-year-old.
I ride for the institution itself. Beyond my own personal circles, I ride for the doctors, nurses, and staff who provide countless families with world-class medical support and profound solace in the most trying moments of their lives.
Children’s Hospital was there for Matt and Julie, and they were there for Ruby and me. I hope you will join me in supporting my ride so that Children’s can continue to be there for the next family who walks through their doors in a moment of crisis.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support.
