This May 9th, will be 9 years since Cooper passed away from an inoperable brain tumor known as a DIPG, which stands for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. At the time, there were no treatments for the tumor other than radiation which in Cooper's case, gave him perhaps one extra month of life. While there are still no treatments available for this cancer, researchers are making huge strides towards discovering new ways to combat it. A fact that I've never been able to wrap my head around, is that of all federal funding for cancer research, only 4% goes to childhood cancers. of that small amount, even less goes to childhood brain cancers. Now, 9 years later, those numbers remain the same. That is why it is up to us as individuals to see that research continues for these cancers.
Since the first year after his death, the Climb for Coop bicycle team has been raising money by riding in the Courage Classic, a fundraiser held in the mountains west of Denver each summer to support Children's Hospital of Colorado. The team has raised more than $200,000 dollars for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital during this time.
This year we especially excited for a few reasons. First, is that every dollar raised, will be targeted directly into DIPG research. Second, is that a private donor is matching every dollar raised to establish the Cooper Deming DIPG Research Fund, doubling the impact of your donation in support of DIPG research. This fund will be administered by the Morgan Adams Foundation, a Colorado-based organization that has funded nearly $15 million in pediatric cancer research including some of the top DIPG researchers at the Children's Hospital of Colorado. Lastly, the good news is that researchers are closer than ever to finding not just a treatment, but possibly a cure for this cancer.
How you can help:
Ride with us. Register for the Courage Classic and join the Climb for Coop team. There are rides of different lengths throughout the weekend. There is even an option to be a virtual rider if you can't get to the event.
Donate:
For every dollar raised for Climb for Coop, a matching amount is donated to the Cooper Deming DIPG research Fund.
Cooper never got to live his dream of playing high school baseball. He never got his first kiss, never learned to drive. He ran out of time because research ran out of money. We ride so the next family has options. We ride for Cooper--and for every other child who receives this horrible diagnosis.
