Riding for Alexander — And Every Heart That Needs a Little Help
This year, I’ll be riding in the 2025 Courage Classic to support the Colorado Children’s Hospital — specifically the Heart Institute — in honor of our son, Alexander (lovingly nicknamed Beanstalk), and the incredible team that has cared for him.
Beanstalk was born with severe intrauterine growth restriction and multiple congenital heart defects, including a complex coarctation of the aorta, a ventricular septal defect, and a patent foramen ovale. From the moment he arrived, our lives were swept into a world of NICUs, cardiac imaging, surgical planning, and sleepless nights in hospital chairs. Through every test, echo, and round of monitoring, the cardiology team stood by us—not only with clinical excellence but with the kind of compassion that keeps optimism alive when you’re running low.
At just a few weeks old, Alexander underwent major open-heart surgery. It was a long and complex operation, but thanks to the remarkable skill and precision of the cardiac surgery and ICU teams, he made it through stronger than he started. He still has a long road ahead, but his heart is stronger, and so are we.
Now, it’s my turn to show up for them.
The Courage Classic isn't just a bike ride. It’s a way to give back to the people who save tiny lives every single day. Every dollar I raise will go toward the tools, research, and care teams that give kids like Alexander the chance to grow up and ride their own bikes one day.
If you're able, I would be deeply grateful for your support. Every donation helps fund hope — and hearts.
With gratitude and grit,
-John
