This year, I’m dedicating every mile I ride in the 2025 Courage Classic to Alexander — lovingly known as Beanstalk — whose strength, spirit, and story have left a lasting mark on my heart.
Alexander was born with severe intrauterine growth restriction, meaning he was much smaller than expected before birth, and with several complex congenital heart defects. These included a coarctation of the aorta (a serious narrowing of the main artery carrying blood from the heart), a ventricular septal defect (a hole between the lower chambers of his heart), and a patent foramen ovale (an opening in the heart that normally closes after birth but remained open).
Just weeks into life, he underwent major open-heart surgery. Though his journey is far from over, he has faced every challenge with resilience, surrounded by a team of expert caregivers and the unwavering love of his parents. What stood out just as much as Alexander’s resilience was the love that surrounded him. His parents never left his side. Through every procedure, every sleepless night, and every uncertain moment, they showed unwavering devotion and kindness — their compassion touched not only Alexander, but everyone who cared for him.
His nickname, Beanstalk, couldn’t be more fitting. In folklore, a beanstalk symbolizes upward growth, overcoming obstacles, and the journey to something greater — a reflection of Alexander’s story. His strength, and the strength of his family, remind me of the quiet courage it takes to rise through uncertainty and reach for hope.
It’s an honor to ride for him — to support the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and to help give more kids like Alexander the chance to grow, thrive, and chase their own adventures.
Thank you for taking the time to read Alexander’s story — and thank you so much for your support. Every donation makes a difference.
