I am riding in the Courage Classic fundraiser event so other kids and families have the same opportunity for expert and quality care at Children's Hospital Colorado as my son received during his cancer treatment.
Fitz was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma in 2020 when he was 3 years old. While this diagnosis was earthshaking for our family, we were confident in the expertise of the clinicians as they provided compassionate and thoughtful care. Through surgeries, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy, the Children's Colorado Hospital team rallied with us during the 4 months of hospitalizations, multiple procedures, and numerous outpatient visits.
We rejoiced when Fitz rang the bell in 2021 signaling the end of his treatment and the start of a new chapter being cancer-free. We were blessed by the extraordinary care Fitz received during every encounter. He looked forward to seeing the nurses, providers, and Child Life staff at each visit as these relationships and positive experiences remain prominent in his memory despite the pain and challenges.
Fitz learned to ride a two-wheel bicycle at 3 years old and we are grateful that he is still healthy and riding his bike at 8 years old (though he is more into rollerblading these days!).
The immeasurable gift of a child living life to the fullest is not taken for granted and I hope that through the Courage Classic fundraising efforts, other kids are able to have the same opportunity made possible by the exceptional caregivers at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Due to years of scientific research and clinical studies, Burkitt's Lymphoma has effective treatment with low recurrence. Continued funding is vital to ensure targeted treatment for all types of pediatric cancer as well as for pediatric infectious diseases research.
