This year I am thrilled to be riding the Courage Classic for Maya.
At a 16-week ultrasound, Maya was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). This rare congenital heart defect occurs when the left side of the heart doesn't develop properly during pregnancy. The Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) assumed her care and provided exceptional fetal cardiology support. After her birth at CHCO, the anatomy of Maya's heart proved too complex for surgery, and she was placed on the heart transplant waiting list at five days old. She received her gifted heart at 16 days old. Due to the selfless gift of organ donation and the remarkable ongoing medical care, research, and support from the CHCO Heart Institute, Maya is a thriving two-year-old with a love of music, dancing, puppies, hats, and parks. She does not meet a stranger and greets everyone with a wave and a "hi."
The Courage Classic is an opportunity to support positive outcomes and healthier futures for kids like Maya.
