“Super Baby Drake“
My youngest of three boys, Drake, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at 6 weeks old. His map of treatment led to a bone marrow transplant at 7 months old. The first year of his life was inpatient at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Drake was isolated from his brothers, Theo (5) and Mack (2) and so many more we prayed would have the chance to know him.
Drake, now 4, is nothing short of a miracle. When I am asked about baby milestones I cannot remember any of his. Those milestones were not in the cards for his first year of life and the years it has taken to rehabilitate from the stem cell transplant that saved his life.
Watching Drake last fall walk into preschool with his oversized Superman backpack was a milestone of immense gratitude I will never forget. These simple yet monumental milestones no parent should ever be robbed of because of cancer.
When you look at Drake today it can be easy to forget or not even know what he has fought through so far in his 4 years of life.
My Why
I ride my bike at the Courage Classic to raise money for a hospital that fought tirelessly 24/7 to save my child’s life from cancer. Pulling a burley or 75 lb wee hoo trailer with one of my kids in it over Vail pass again I feel is a privilege I will not take for granted.
I want my kids to know that there is an army out there who supports them and will continue to bring awareness and raise funding until the cure rate for all cancer is 100%. I want to instill in them that there can and will be a world where no family will ever have to fight cancer again. The world does not just keep moving on while there are kids still in the fight with no treatment options and cancer continues to take lives.
We hope for a cure for all cancer.
