Alma triumphantly leaving the NICU
A few days after her 1 month birthday, Alma was released from the NICU at Colorado's Children's Hospital. Samantha and I brought her home to reunite with Heschel and exhaled with relief as her digestion and associated growth-issues improved dramatically over coming weeks. Over nearly 3 weeks at Children's, Alma was treated by a team of talented angels who cared for her as if she was family. In the morning, we would huddle with the attending doctors and GI specialists as they worked through a series of theories and tests until they determined she would likely resolve her issues on her own. And, throughout the day and overnight, her nurses would hold, comfort and carefully feed her until she was strong enough for us to go home (while teaching us along the way!). Thankfully, our NICU stay was relatively short and never existential but we watched these same teams care for multi-month patients and admit much harder cases arriving by helicopter from neighboring states; truly heart wrenching work caring for the most vulnerable humans.
So, this year--my 11th riding in the Courage Classic, I'm so happy to be biking with a new team, "Spinning Spokes for the Littlest Folks," alongside many of those NICU team members.
