In search of fresh inspiration for a challenge that grows harder with each passing year (and each creaky joint), Pudgy turned to a new culture and continent.
Armed with nothing but a bicycle, a map he couldn’t read, and an insatiable appetite for ramen, Pudgy ventured across Japan on a quest to uncover the ultimate training regime for this year’s Courage Classic tour.
Naturally, he picked up a few habits along the way. Pudgy’s training is now inspired by the ancient discipline of the sumo wrestler, minus the rituals, the physique, or any actual grappling ability. He does, however, squat deeply before every ride... mostly because his hamstrings are tight
He’s also fully embraced Japanese etiquette. He now refuses to wear shoes in the garage (you should see the state of his cycling socks), insists on bowing to fellow riders before clipping in, and spends several minutes apologizing to his bike if he accidentally bumps it. Cathy says it’s a phase. Pudgy insists it’s a lifestyle.
And while the prep becomes stranger each year, the ride remains as challenging as ever starting in Copper Mountain each day, with Day 1 summiting Vail Pass twice (44 miles) and Day 2 looping Lake Dillon for another 42 miles.
While Pudgy may not take himself too seriously, the cause he rides for certainly is. In fact, it is more urgent than ever. Your donation directly supports brilliant young investigators at Children's Hospital Colorado's researchers whose work is creating better treatments and brighter futures for children and families. In a time when scientific research faces growing challenges, your support helps ensure that curiosity, innovation, and hope continue to move forward one pedal stroke at a time.
Please support Pudgy Pete’s Courage Classic ride this year! Proceeds will fund three outstanding young researchers at Children’s Hospital Colorado as they pursue groundbreaking work in Heart/Lung, Surgery, and Diabetes. And as always, Pudgy will match every donation, dollar for dollar.
