This year, I will ride my fifteenth Courage Classic, a two-day bike ride in Summit County that supports the Children’s Hospital Colorado. I still plan to ride three days on July 19-21 since the Courage Classic used to be three days. The first day is 80 miles over three passes, including Vail Pass, and a mountain. For the second day, I will ride the longer route option up Loveland Pass, and I will also ride to Breckenridge and up Vail Pass from Copper Mountain to make it longer. The third day is the same route that I rode last year: over 100 miles and up Loveland Pass, Hoosier Pass, and Vail Pass (around 8000 feet of elevation gain).
I ride the Courage Classic because my brother, Kyle, had Pompe Disease, a metabolic disease caused by a genetic mutation that prevents the cells from breaking down glycogen to glucose. He received excellent care at the hospital even though there was no cure for the disease. I ride on the Gene Team, so if the team raises enough money, all the money that I raise goes to the genetics and metabolics department of the hospital to help with research to discover new cures and treatments and help families who cannot afford treatment. Otherwise, it will go to the hospital in general, instead of a specific department.
