Crystal, one of my patients, inspires me to be brave, persevere, and always do it with a smile! So, this July, I am biking up the Rocky Mountains to raise money for the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Crystal was born with complex congenital heart disease that led to severe heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Crystal spent most of her early life in the hospital, specifically in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) where I work, waiting for a heart transplant. Despite being a shining beacon of joy and friend to everyone in the cardiac ICU, Crystal faced numerous life-threatening challenges and setbacks. Earlier this year, by dancing her way into the operating room, she received the gift of life with a new heart. While Crystal is still the sweet, playful toddler that she always has been, she’s now able to be a kid OUTSIDE of the hospital with a new heart that lets her run, play, and grow-up surrounded by her loving family in her home state of New Mexico.
To honor Crystal and what she has taught me, I am putting on a smile, being brave, and taking on this new challenge - my first road biking ride ever! Please consider donating to my ride. The money raised directly supports the care of heart warrior patients, like Crystal, and their dedicated families. Thank you for your support!!
