Never in a million years did I think this nightmare of a journey would be my newborn's reality and the experience still haunts me.

Drake was diagnosed with (AML) Leukemia at 6 weeks old. Today, after many excruciating rounds of chemotherapy and a terrifying bone marrow transplant at Children’s Hospital Colorado, my silly, loving, warrior 3 year old is thriving and running with his big brother's.

I do not take this for granted. Each day is truly a gift.

Drake spent the first year of his life inpatient, isolated from his brother's and loved ones and enduring pain most will never experience in their entire lives. In the picture above Drake has an enormous amount of beads over his shoulder's from the Child Life team and the Beads of Courage program. Each bead represents chemotherapies, over 87 blood and platelet transfusions, pokes for blood draws, NG tube placements and replacements, x-rays, surgeries, sedations, bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, lumbar punctures with chemo, NPO’s, loosing his hair, EEG’s, transplant day, ICU visits, EKG’s, Echo's, MRI's, CT scans, PT, OT, Speech Therapy, dressing changes, port removals, TPN, respiratory support, and the list goes on.

As much as I want to forget the nightmare endured, I will never forget the 24/7 lifesaving care Drake had at Children's Hospital Colorado.

I am forever grateful.

When you look at Drake today it can be easy to forget or not even know what he has fought through so far but I am here to tell you we need to do more to change the future of care, to push towards a cure, to live in a world where no parent ever has to hear there are no more options in their child's fight to live.

No child should EVER have to battle cancer.
