I ride for patients like Eliyah.
When Eliyah was born last October, her parents and older sister were surprised to find out she had Apert syndrome - a random genetic mutation that causes differences such as craniosynostosis, or the premature fusion of the skull. As the incredible parents they are, they quickly shifted, relocating to Colorado to be closer to medical care, and have been strong advocates to make sure Eliyah will have every opportunity that her sister does.
When Eliyah developed a runny nose early in the new year, it seemed to hit her harder than her sister and required a trip to the ED. Eliyah quickly developed respiratory failure, as her nasal bone structure and a lot of boogers made it incredibly difficult for her to breathe on her own. She was admitted to the PICU where she was intubated and supported with a ventilator. This is where I had the pleasure of meeting the Chase family and learning more of their story.
Her dad Chris transformed her PICU room into his home office so he could be there to support her 24/7. Despite the severity of her illness, he managed to lift up the team with his quick wit and sarcasm (often in the middle of the night) and we all quickly came to love Eliyah.
Eliyah continues to be a fighter and has defied everyone's expectations. She got to go home for a few days but is currently in the hospital weaning down on oxygen and making progress every day as she regains her strength in hopes of going home soon! Now that she can breathe out of her nose, she gives the most beautiful smiles to all of her new visitors. Eliyah has been through more in her short 6 months than most of us go through in our lifetimes, and she is tough as nails. Her parents attribute her success and their strength to their faith in God.
It is a privilege this year to ride the Courage Classic for Eliyah and her family, and I will think of them as we climb up and over the mountains this summer. Please consider donating to our fundraising efforts so that Children can continue to provide care to patients and families like Eliyah's.
